Torii Gateway of Oyamazumi Shrine
Mystic shrine of which approach appears only in winter
In 1888, when Mt. Bandai erupted, many villages sank into the bottom of Lake Hibara.
Oyamazumi Shrine escaped submersion, and stands still on the lakeside even today with its approach and torii gate sunk.
You can see the submerged tori gate from the surface of Lake Hibara while enjoying the sightseeing motorboat in summer.
However, in winter, when the water level lowers, the top of the submerged tori gate appears from the frozen lake surface.
In addition, the roots of the trees planted along the approach also appear.
Only in winter, “the past approach” comes out of the lake.
You can see this mystic tori gateway only in winter, when Lake Hibara freezes, and in spring thaw.
