Lake district of Japan, Urabandai

Urabandai’s landscape differs from the better known destinations of Tokyo, Kyoto, and even Hokkaido. Urabandai has been designated as a national park and is known as the the Lake District of Japan due to its several hundred of ponds and lakes.

曽原湖

The area was devastated by rock flow as a result of the volcanic eruption in 1888. These rock flows blocked rivers, which led to the creation of hundreds of lakes and marshes. Thanks to the re-greening efforts of our ancestors, this rugged land has been transformed into a spectacular forest over the last 150 years.

The area around the volcano now boasts a wealth of beautiful scenery.

Undiscovered Beauty of Japan

This area has relatively few tourists from overseas. In other words, it’s an area largely unknown to foreign tourists.

The impressive landscape comprised of large and small lakes and forests was created as a result of the volcanic eruption.  People outside of Japan are still largely unaware of the beauty that awaits them.

Each of the four seasons showcases a different aspect of the scenic landscape. Whether it be the green season, the changing of the leaves in autumn, or wintertime, every season is beautiful in its own way so it’s hard to decide when the best time to visit is.

The busiest time of the year in Urabandai is from mid-October to early November for the autumnal changing of the leaves. If you are visiting for the first time, we recommend coming here between late May to June. The luscious green season is the low season when there are fewer tourists, making it a more relaxing stay. This season is the one most preferred by locals as the weather is at its most comfortable.
